Home of the Merryman Performing Arts Center
What will our students see at the Merryman this year?
Central students will enjoy a wonderful Merryman student season this year with a wide array of performers from life size puppets to a flamenco guitarist. In September, we welcome world-class flamenco guitarist Ronald Radford. Mr. Radford is known for his warm and friendly style of talking with students. He introduces each selection with a blend of information, inspiration, and stories of his personal experiences with the Gypsies in Spain. Nebraska native, Jim Salestrom was a popular performer with our students when the Merryman first opened and we are very excited that he will perform for us again. Jim has enjoyed a long and successful career performing with country greats Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, and Kenny Rogers, to name a few. We are so lucky that Kearney High School hosts its annual play festival at the Merryman followed shortly by the State One-Act Competition. Between the two events, our students will see many talented student performances. Prior to their evening performance, the cast of “The Hobbit” will demonstrate to our students their life-size puppets, explaining how they are created and how they work. Finally, the UNK band will recreate the experience of a John Phillip Sousa concert for our students. The Sousa band performed in Kearney in 1901 and his concerts were a mix of classical and popular music of the time as well as his famous marches. Our students will have the opportunity to participate in the concert. We hope you will join your child for many of these performances. Specific times will be announced as the dates approach.
